won scholarships & attended both Indiana State University and
Northwestern University School of Music, played in: marching band, 
symphonic wind ensemble  (John P. Paynter, dir.), concert band, symphony orchestra, opera orchestra, percussion & marimba ensemble, and stage band (directed by Rufus Reid)
